CASE2
Development of gearbox for mass production type rainwater drainage pump
1
Issues and background
Floods are occurring frequently due to increased levels of rainfall. While the deterioration of rainwater drainage pump systems intended to prevent flood damage is advancing and it is difficult to secure budgets for them, the time for large-scale renewal is approaching. To strive to solve this issue, a project for system development to achieve drastic reductions in cost was organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
2
Initiatives to strive to solve issues
The project aims to reduce the cost of rainwater drainage pump systems at drainage pump stations to as low as 1/20 through the use of automobile engines and other equipment. Standing at a position between automobile engine manufacturers and pump manufacturers, we have developed a gearbox with test equipment elements that can accommodate combinations formed from three types of engines with differing characteristics, and two types of pumps.

Results and future developments
Development and production were completed in a short period of time.
A verification test was also successfully completed in Tsukuba for operation using an automobile engine.
From here on, the project will proceed to Phase 2 where it will move on to the stage of demonstration in six locations across the country. In the future, we will investigate how we can contribute to its original objective of cost reduction, and examine what is required in order to reduce maintenance costs.
